This initial issue of HFUU-Lahaina Chapter news is going to all Maui chapter subscribers as a seed to grow the newest HFUU chapter on Maui's west side. More news to come. Please read and share widely, especially with friends on the west side.

The inaugural locavore potluck meeting of the newly formed Lahaina chapter will take place this coming Monday, Oct. 16th at Na 'Aikane o Maui Cultural Center, 562 Front. St. in Lahaina

Doors open at 5:30pm. The meeting will run from 6pm-8pm.

Come learn about the history of 'ulu in Lahaina and about the Farmer Apprentice Mentoring program (FAM).

As you are all aware, our effectiveness as an organization, in perpetuating the values of regenerative farming and our support of family farmers, depends on the strength and visibility of our brand and the good works we do for our community. How do we let the world know we are here and what our community values are? By participating in high profile events like the upcoming 47th annual Maui Marathon - this Sunday, Oct. 15th.
 
Call For Volunteers

As many of you are aware, I supplement my volunteer work for HFUU by serving as a volunteer manager/consultant for local events. While organizing the volunteers for this weekends Maui Marathon events I was asked if I could contact local farmers to provide fruit for the runners at the finish line in Ka'anapali. Of course I contacted Mauna Kahalawai's superstar board member, Irene Plunkett-Mina, who immediately agreed to make the arrangements.

I was also aware that of the 18 Aid Stations that keep the runners hydrated and inspired along the 26.2 mile course, beginning in Kahului, they were short one Aid Station. Janell Simpliciano will captain the 17th Aid Station at Wahikuli Wayside Park (mile 24.5) which serves all of the races; 5K, 10K, half marathon, full marathon and full marathon relay. Janell needs a dozen volunteers to help pass out water and pre-mixed Gatorade to the runners from 5am to noon or 1pm. Please call or text Janell at (808) 269-3100 to join the HFUU Maui Marathon Aid Station Crew this coming Sunday.
Please visit the volunteer website and then sign up on the volunteer registration-scheduling site (a resource I will soon be integrating with HFUU's NeonCRM database) and join me in Ka'anapali this Friday and/or Saturday, show up for Janell's Aid Station Team Sunday and show the 1775+ athletes attending what HFUU Aloha looks like.
 
I'm still processing all of the informative and inspiring information and people I connected with this weekend at the HFUU Convention in West O'ahu. Of the many high points I could share I was deeply inspired by Lahaina chapter president, James Simpliciano, and his presentation about what is happening in traditional and regenerative agriculture on the west side. As it turns out, I'll be staying in Ka'anapali during my role as the marathon volunteer coordinator, so Bentley and I will be attending Monday's Lahaina chapter gathering & locavore potluck. See you there!
