TO SPEAK ABOUT MAUI’S WATERSHEDS

Hawai'i Farmers Union United’s Mauna Kahalawai Chapter presents an evening with agricultural specialist Simon Russell. The evening also includes a hands-on kuʻi kalo (taro pounding) activity and dinner, 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 16 at Maui Tropical Plantation’s Maui Chef’s Table venue.

Russell is a longtime HFUU member who has served on several boards and committees, including as the organization’s State Legislative Committee chairman, State vice president, and Haleakalā chapter president.

His presentation is titled “Restoration, Maintenance and Management of Maui’s Watersheds” and will focus on the recent Board of Water Supply Temporary Investigative Group’s report on the feasibility of purchasing and maintaining the East Maui Irrigation (EMI) water-delivery system.

Russell will also discuss an upcoming legislative bill to create watershed councils modeled on the ʻAha Moku Council, which will restore, maintain and manage the watersheds.

Russell lives in Makawao with his wife Kiki, who works as an organic farm inspector, and their four children. He is also a candidate for the State House of Representatives, District 12, Upcountry, Maui.

Admission is $10 for Hawai'i Farmers Union United members; $15 for non-members. This is a waste-free event. Please bring your own plate and utensils.
